Country Man Ian Taylor Profile

We had a chance to catch up with presenter Ian Taylor and find out what makes him tick!

What musical influences do you use on your playlists ? MY influences in the station are mainly easy listening although at home I am more into classic rock but our other presenter Stewart is getting me into the new country scene

Have you enjoyed the recent fundraisers for the hospital radio? Yes the fundraising is fun to do and although we are a non profit making charity I feel in this day and age it is the way to go

How many shows would you estimate you have done so far as an AHR presenter? I started at the station last August so a show a week from then and some weeks 2 as I now co-present the Friday show with Stewart Roxburgh, rough guess 50 shows

You present the Saturday evening show, what is your preferred time to present ? I did do the Saturday show now I am on on a tuesday evening ideal day would be a Friday 5 -7 then I know I will be on time for the 7-9 as well

Have you had many guests on your shows? I have had 1 guest and that was going to come on but work commitments pulled the plug on that

What is your ultimate studio guest, and what tracks would you play on a top 5 list? My favourite guests to be on the show hmmm wellI  think it would be Sir Cliff Richard and Ozzy Osborne can you just imagine that show lol its hard to pick a top 5 as I have so many favourite but Dean Martin would be there

Do you remember your finest hour on hospital radio ? My finest hour on the Radio Station was being told that i had a show and being able to go to the hopital without any fear ( I have a phobia of hospitals )

Would you prefer to see more MP3, Itune content available to presenters, or would you prefer the Vinyl record collection in the studio? As everything is changing I do think that as a station we must at least try and keep up but we dont want to lose the feeling of an actual hands on Radio station I still like the vinyl I think it is a more richer sound scratches and all.

Show Updates

The radio schedule is busy as ever, as more of our presenters are adding to their repertoire of presenting skills. Many focus, on the music, while others are partnering with another DJ, for a double act. Of the known double acts, we have Ally & Chris, ‘All-Time Hits’ on a Sunday, Catriona and Jennifer ‘Musical Round-a-bout’ on a Monday evening, James Clark   & Richard Hamilton, ‘The Music Box’ on Wednesday, and Calum and Graham often bring a sports show out live on Thursday, complimented with Alan’s witty banter!

David Scott on Friday’s at 5-7, sets the weekend up with Stewart Roxburgh & Ian Taylor’s Country Music show(7-9), takes listeners through into the weekend. Just some of the variety on offer at AHR.

The idea behind hospital radio isn’t to launch careers, it is about fun, and the occasional mistake whilst cuing in a track, and then having to have Martha’s training kick in, as you switch on your default Vinyl track. Mike manley refers to this as the ‘Romance of Hospital Radio’, emphasising a need to entertain. But entertainment comes in so many different forms.

Some of the funniest shows are unscripted, and if the presenters are having fun, then it will invariably be transmitted back to the patient listening in the wards.

So, if anyone reading this blog likes the sound of this, then why not give Hospital Radio a go…….it might just be the best thing you do this week! Find about more about the Hospitals  Broadcasting Association .

Meet the webmaster

We get to know Chris Berry, long-serving member of the hospital radio team.

How did you first get involved in hospital radio? I heard there was a hospital radio at Ayr and through a friend I got a hold of Mike’s phone number and it just moved quickly from there and I started on the Sunday show and 6 years on I’m still here!
What was your first song you played on Hospital radio? I wanted to start my radio career in style so I chose Don McLean’s American Pie and yes, the full 9 minute version.
Is technology undermining the work of artists? I believe it’s much easier for a up-and-coming artist to get reconised with the likes of Facebook, MySpace etc. so I think the artists that have been around for years didn’t reap the benefits of today’s technology.
You are hospital radio webmaster, who are the most computer literate
presenters ?
I would say I have basic computer skills, probably the younger presenters with have a better knowledge just fresh out of school
What is the best memory on hospital radio to date ? That’s a hard question, I have quite a few from over the years… but I think more recently when Ali G and I make prank phone calls to Mike Manley, he always falls for them and keeps saying to us, and I quote ” You will never get me again “! (famous last words)… We are already planning our next prank phone call, maybe we can get a fellow presenter the next time??
Have you ever used your hospital radio status to gain entry into a VIP
event such as Ayr United director’s box?
Haha, I wish! – Only thing that has came close to that is I said I was part of hospital radio to get a discount on a Audio Cable from a music shop… not quite the rock star VIP treatment though!!
What songs would feature on your ideal show ? Me and Ali G are big in to our Rock music, so the playlist would include the likes of Thin Lizzy, Bruce Springsteen, Queen, Led Zeppelin. I’m also in to Blues music as well so I think I would have to throw in the like of Chuck Berry, B.B. King and Aretha Franklin.

Radio Airwaves

Presenting on a radio station can be a real pleasure, and some of the double acts currently operating on our shows add that dynamic so often necessasry to relay a fun factor to our listeners. In some cases, presenters go to great lengths to ensure there is a nice mix of great musical and entertaining banter.

Thursday presenter Calum Campbell and sports presenter Graham English have a weekly phone-in where they discuss live, the sporting issues of the week.

Presenting Tips

One of the best tips given to grooms before delivering their wedding speech  is to imagine a room full of naked people……so what is the best advice for a radio presenter to deliver ahigh standard of show worthy of Ayr hospital radio? Perhaps everyone finds their feet, however, often just smiling while talking gets the best sound, and of course playing excellent music is a must!

If you are feeling confident, why not send your demos to these guys, Demo Critique Service for a review of your show. Who knows you might be the next big thing in radio, all the big names started somewhere, Chris Moyles, on radio Luxembourg, Ken Bruce made a name for himself by moving to London.

DJ of the month

Throughout March we are encouraging all the presenters to put their heads together and vote on the DJ of the month. The criteria,

1) The most requests

2) The best music

3) The best content

4) The biggest fan base

All of these are hard to judge I know, but as editor of this blog, I am nominating Calum Campbell on Thursday for going beyond the call of duty. Calum calls in on my sport’s show every Saturday with Ayr United Football updates and Pie of the month features, and he has also  spent a considerable amount of time and effort  on providing the best   entertainment  for the patients.

Calum’s show is a healthy mix of old and new music.
” I’ve been trying to rotate and play fresh lists so far. Most requested this year has been ‘Tom Jones’… my fave TJ has been ‘Black Betty’ which I played last week. On Thursday I featured the up and coming Glasgow band Sugar Crisis, an eighties flavoured duo who have recently gained a record contract and positive critical reviews after touring the festival circuit last summer. Thursday 5 – 7 has something old, something new, something chart and something from the cupboard under my stairs (and I don’t mean my old golf clubs).”
This month has seen more progress in the studio and presenters guest lists will be filling up.

Ayr Hospital Volunteers Buffet

The christmas buffet was held in February to thank the volunteers, including the radio presenters for all their efforts.

Some happy faces, Graham, Mike, Chris, Ali and Ann

The chairman thanked all the volunteers for making the effort to provide the patients with such fine entertainment. And Stewart Roxburgh was on hand to provide some cracking music throughout the evening once the official part was over. I got the impressiong Stewart would have had all volunteers on the dance floor, had it not been for the speeches and the huge inconvenience of having to eat all the buffet food…..it’s a hard life!
